A major upgrade of the cricket practice facilities at Grinter Reserve, home of the Newcomb and District Cricket Club, is nearing completion.
The $850,000 nets redevelopment is being carried out with the help of funding from all three levels of government.
The Australian Government has contributed $476,440 through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure program, alongside $273,560 from the Council and $100,000 from the Victorian Government via Sport and Recreation Victoria.
The works will deliver brand new turf and synthetic practice nets, replacing the reserve’s existing outdated facilities.
Construction is expected to finish in June, in time for the start of cricket season in October.
Mayor Trent Sullivan visited Grinter Reserve to view construction progress alongside Federal Member for Corangamite Libby Coker, State Member for Geelong Christine Couzens, and Newcomb and District CC president John Elliott and vice president Troy Whitworth.
Libby Coker:
"Our region is undergoing rapid population growth and major community infrastructure is needed to create liveable and connected communities.
The Newcomb & District Cricket Club run fantastic programs, and with the continued emergence of women’s cricket across our region, these upgrades will promote many new opportunities and encourage more players to join the Dinos which is so exciting."
Mayor Trent Sullivan:
"The club’s turf and hard wicket nets have previously been at different locations within the reserve, forcing players to train in separate groups.
We're rapt for their players, who’ll now be able to train together in a brand new, high quality facility.
Thank you to both the federal and state governments for their vital contributions to what is a very much needed redevelopment."Christine Couzens:"As the Member for Geelong, I am proud to support the upgraded Grinter Reserve cricket nets.
It is exciting for community sporting clubs to have upgrades to their facilities. I congratulate the Newcomb and District Cricket Club on their work to provide first-class facilities for their members and locals to enjoy."
