Local residents say they are ready to fight the City of Greater Geelong’s plan to close three libraries and cut back hours at seven others.
Parents and children joined with Federal Member for Corangamite, Libby Coker MP, and State Member for the Bellarine, Alison Marchant MP, at the Barwon Heads Library on Saturday in response to the council’s announcement.
The councils’ plans were revealed on Friday to close the Barwon Heads Library among others across the region, including Geelong West and Highton.
Quotes attributable to Libby Coker MP:
“The Barwon Heads community is justifiably angry. Only a few years ago their library was under threat and now it’s happening again.”
“This Barwon Heads community are fighters, they’ve saved this library before, and I know they have the drive to do it again.
“But this is the tip of the iceberg - there are community projects under threat - delays and cutbacks are just unacceptable.
Quotes attributable to President of the Friends of the Barwon Heads Community Library, Karen Firth:
“Our library is a space to visit that strengthens our community, that provides access to books, a place for activities and connections, and helping to develop literacy skills.
“A library is a third home and neutral welcoming space that no other infrastructure in our community provides.”
“It is very important for libraries to be in the communities they serve and that we are not forced to travel to them.”
“It’s cheap, a shared space for $58,000 each year. We don’t want a city style regional approached applied to our library system. Beyond a repository for books, it is a place of social connection and learning. You don’t have to buy a coffee or play sport to walk in here.
“The library is increasingly important as the heart of our community.”
