Local Federal MP Libby Coker has welcomed the Governments decision to fast-track the Barwon Road duplication and the upgrades to Geelongs rail line in the federal Budget.
I appreciate the Morrison-McCormack Government has taken a bipartisan approach to funding local infrastructure projects. Both projects will have a positive impact on jobs and cut congestion, Ms Coker said.
Its timely considering the population boom in the Armstrong Creek growth corridor that the Barwon Heads road upgrades are brought forward.
Ms Coker said she would also like to see the Government use the upgrades as an opportunity to commit to employing local apprentices to work on the project.
It has taken some time, but it is pleasing the Morrison-McCormack Government has finally taken the initiative to bring forward in funding for the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds rail duplication, she said.
I have been campaigning for the Federal Government to fast track this project since my election to Parliament. Prior to todays announcement, the bulk of the funding wasnt due to flow until 2024.
This is a big issue for our local community who have been facing delays and overcrowding. Not only will this project address those issues, it will also create jobs for local people.
Ms Coker said she would now urge Prime Minister Scott Morrison to pull his finger out and work constructively with the state government to ensure a timely delivery of the promised fast rail between Geelong and Melbourne.
