TUCKED behind the Springdale Community Church, a dozen volunteers of all ages tend to the Springdale Community Garden which has received a Federal Government grant of $5000 to install a new solar panel, rechargeable battery upgrades, and raised garden beds.
Provided through the Stronger Communities Programme, the newly installed solar panel has been connected to a battery system which is now recharging tools, lighting work sheds, and linked in with a water pump so that volunteers can water the garden at any time of day.
Meeting with volunteers, Federal Member for Corangamite, Libby Coker, said community gardens play an important role in bringing together people of all backgrounds.
“Solar panels, battery systems, and raised garden beds for our older community members ensure this garden remains a safe, inclusive, and sustainable place to enjoy the wonders of gardening,” Ms Coker said.
“The volunteers here do amazing work, offering so much of their fresh produce to the Food Bank -- the way these organisations work together is truly beautiful.”
“I’d like to encourage newcomers to our region, and those looking for a new hobby, to head over to the garden and get involved.”
Springdale Community Garden Secretary, Anna Gillard, said the upgrades will foster a safe, efficient, and sustainable garden for the whole community to enjoy.
