Local schools and students are being urged to get involved in this year’s Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee to promote literacy.
Member for Corangamite, Libby Coker MP said the spelling bee, hosted by Kids News, is a fun way for students to develop a passion for words.
“As a former school teacher I know that spelling bees are a lot of fun, and they have wider benefits like helping children develop confidence and a real love of words and language,” Libby said.
“Literacy skills provide a fundamental base to learning other skills.”
Libby said schools across Corangamite can register to take part in this free competition until August 19 by visiting: www.spelling-bee.com.au
The Spelling Bee is open for Years 3 to 8, across three reading levels: Years 3-4, Years 5-6 and Years 7-8. Schools’ rounds of the Spelling Bee lead on to state/territory finals, then, ultimately, a national final.
“I would love to see all our local schools in Corangamite getting involved in the Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee and demonstrating the talent of this region’s students,” Libby said.
“It is a great way for schools and their students to develop a love for words, which helps improve literacy, comprehension and critical thinking.”
The Australian Government has provided over $345,000 of funding to support the initiative.
