Applications Open for the Government’s Youth Steering Committee

16 September 2022

The Member for Corangamite, Libby Coker MP, is urging young people to embrace an amazing opportunity to shape our future, and apply for the Federal Government's Youth Steering Committee.

“I encourage young people in Corangamite to consider applying for our Government's youth steering committee.”

“The Albanese Government is establishing the Youth Steering Committee to enable young Australians to help form future Australian policies and programs. The Government wants your help to change the way that government and young people work together,” Ms Coker said.

“The Government is dedicated to ensuring the voices of youth are heard, and for the Government to have access to their experience and viewpoints.”

“It is so important that young people have input into the policy and decisions that affect them. A diverse group of young people from right across our country are being sought to work with the Government to provide their perspective on the issues that matter.”

Minister for Youth, Dr Anne Aly, opened applications for the committee, with young Australians aged between 12 and 25 encouraged to apply. The committee will include 15 young people from diverse backgrounds across Australia. You don't need any previous experience to apply.

Committee members will work closely with Dr Aly, advocating for young people and working with government officials and Members of Parliament.

“The Committee will help to develop a new Youth Engagement Model and create meaningful opportunities for young Australians to work with the Government on the issues that matter to them,” Minister Aly said.

“To ensure the committee represents the diversity of young people in Australia, the application process actively encourages applications from a range of backgrounds and experiences including young people with a disability, young people with lived experience of mental ill-health and young people from lower socio-economic backgrounds.”

The Youth Steering Committee’s first meeting will take place in November in Canberra. The Committee is supported by the Australian Youth Affairs Coalition (AYAC).

Applications to join the Committee close on Wednesday 5 October.

Libby is available to talk with potential applicants to encourage and assist in their application. Libby’s office number is 03 5261 7683.
